Corey Toole Try from Round 5 of Super Rugby Pacific 2024

ACT Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham believes the side are on the right path to contend with the best after a 60-21 thumping of Moana Pasifika.

The Brumbies were at their clinical best as their trounced Moana Pasifika, who are having their best season in Super Rugby history with two wins from four games.

Wallabies Tom Wright and Noah Lolesio were excellent throughout the night whilst winger Corey Toole further staked his claims for a maiden Test call-up.

"We had a good week. We had one training session and we trained exceptionally well," Larkham said after the win.

"We turned things around a couple of weeks ago and I thought the preparation was good. I thought the intensity was where it needed to be.

"...You've got to be happy when you put 60 points on any team."

What will also please Larkham is the impact of his wider squad as he was forced to deep dig into their depth charts after injuries to Andy Muirhead, Blake Schoupp and Len Ikitau.

Hudson Creighton had an instant impact, slicing over for the opening try in place of Len Ikitau, completing his double right after the break. The former Australia A centre also set up fellow centre Tua when he once the race to the loose ball and found hooker Billy Pollard, who has impressed as he continues to start over Lachlan Lonergan.

Backrower Charlie Cale’s freakish pace and presence at lineout was welcome after missing the past two weeks with injury.

Meanwhile, scrumhalf Harrison Goddard delivered his best game in Super Rugby Pacific after Ryan Lonergan was shifted to the bench. His pilfer and charge down in the first five minutes set the tempo early.

"We can be a lot better, but Moana, such a class team - we had to play the full 80 to break them down," Lolesio said. "The Brumbies are always known for their depth, and across the season it will be tested.

"With a bench like that, that's the reason we put on 60 points."

It sets up a titanic clash next week with the Queensland Reds at Suncorp Stadium, with the Brumbies leaping the Reds on the ladder before Les Kiss' side faces the Western Force next week.

"They're playing good footy, there's no doubt about that. Their attack is really good (and) it's enjoyable to watch. It'll be a good entertaining crowd up there," Larkham said on the Reds

"I'm looking forward to the game, but we've got a lot of work to do."

Larkham stressed the need to fix up their discipline, reduced to 14 when Ollie Sapsford was yellow carded as a result of one too many penalties on their line.

"The only reason they got in there was because of our ill-discipline," Larkham added.

"Half a yard, getting back onside, and giving about 50 centimetres at the back of a ruck, and we didn't do that on two occasions, which allowed them to get into the 22 which hurt us.

"We were down a man there (in the second half). We need to tidy that up. That was disappointing as well.

"We spoke about it at half-time. We didn't want any more points put on us and a bit of ill-discipline again, getting the yellow card."
