After playing overseas in France and Japan since 2011, Giteau returned to where it all began in the nation's captial, lacing up the boots in his first John I Dent Cup game since 2006.
“Last time I played for Queanbeyan Whites and we played Gungahlin. I think I broke my thumb, like 10-15 minutes into the game,” Giteau said.
“Wanting to compete, try and play some footy. I think when you don’t do it for a while you realise how much you miss it.”
Giteau says the Eagles welcomed him with open arms and are letting him take his time to adjust to their playing style.
“For the first week I’m just trying to learn my role and how the team plays and how they like to play, it was a big learning week for me," Giteau said.
Although Giteau may need some time to get the gears in motion he also brings a lot to the table for the Eagles' young stars.
“I think once I feel comfortable and if Joey wants to ask questions I’m always there to help and not just Joey but anyone. So far for me it’s been about me learning but if I can pass on any knowledge, I’d love to share that," Giteau said.
Yet while the 103-capped Wallaby can bring a new level of intensity on the field for the Eagles, his main focus lies off the ground.
“I’ve got a young family now we’ve just had a daughter about a month ago. So my focus is just on being in Canberra, getting back involved within the community and getting settled,” Giteau said.
“I don’t think I’ve been in Canberra for eight or nine years now, so for me it’s just trying to get back into the community, mix with old friends, stay with my family and just enjoy this time.”
