Mitch Chapman is an outstanding utility forward and a valuable new signing for the CA Brumbies. Chapman joins the CA Brumbies from the Reds, having represented the Queenslanders in each of their fixtures over the past two seasons. Despite his former side’s disappointing 2007 Investec Super 14 season, the ultra-consistent lock/back-rower started each match for the Reds before signing with the CA Brumbies in May. Regarded as a future Test player, Chapman, who was initially selected in the train-on squad for the Rugby World Cup, was not considered for the Wallabies campaign in France after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction at the end of the 2007 Investec Super 14 season. However, the 24 year old is expected to be available for the beginning of the CA Brumbies’ season and will join the army of outstanding locks and loose forwards including Mark Chisholm, Stephen Hoiles and George Smith.
Born in Sydney, Chapman moved to Queensland with his family and attended Brisbane Grammar School. In 2001 he was selected in the Australian Schoolboys, going on to captain the squad in their tour of the United Kingdom. Having been drafted into the Reds Rugby College in 2002, Chapman represented the Australian Under 21’s in 2003 and 2004, playing under CA Brumbies coach Laurie Fisher and alongside the likes of Adam Ashley-Cooper, Mark Gerrard and Guy Shepherdson. The reliable lineout jumper made his Super Rugby debut in 2005 against the Crusaders when he answered the Reds’ SOS call in Nelson to replace Rudi Vedalago. The following year he was the ‘go-to’ man for the Wallabies squad when lock Dan Vickerman was prematurely sent home from the Wallabies Spring Tour to undergo a shoulder reconstruction, with Chapman earning Australia A caps against Ireland A and Scotland A.
