George Smith injury update

Scans taken on Monday of George Smith’s medial ligament have revealed the injury is not as serious as first feared.

The club’s most-capped player will still remain on the sideline for at least the next three Brumbies matches after sustaining a grade-two tear to his ligament. Originally it was feared Smith’s Australian season was over, but medical advice was confident on Tuesday that wasn’t the case.

The University of Canberra Brumbies medical team will reassess Smith’s condition at the end of the June break.

Having competed at the top level for more than a decade, Smith has proven to be one of the competition’s most resilient players and this is one of just three lay-offs the champion No. 7 has ever suffered.

“My priority from here is to rest, rehab and ensure my body is 100 per cent leading into the tail end of the Brumbies season,” Smith said.

“I’m confident of playing a further part in the Brumbies 2013 campaign.”

Smith will not be available for interviews until further notice.
