Mark Young, one of Royals Rugby’s most tireless contributors is set to reach a very special milestone this Saturday against Wests at Phillip Oval – his 400th Grade Game for the Club.
Mark, a life member of the club and registrar for many years was part of an instrumental group of dedicated people in bringing the club back from extinction, being involved in all aspects of it’s on and off field running after Royals lost its licensed premises and faced a very uncertain future.
Royals Rugby Club’s record of 460+ games is currently held by President Brian Paule who also plays with Mark in the Royals illustrious 4th Grade Team which is coached by Darren Goodwin.
“Between three of our players including Youngy, Buddha (Brain Paule) and Chris Ferris, they have clocked up over 1100 combined games which is an amazing feet. It’s important for our young players in the club to be aware of this and the hard work they have contributed to see Royals get back on track. It’s people like that that hold club and community rugby together” Goodwin said.
“Youngy’s an institution at Royals,” fellow team-mate and committee member Brendan Maher said.
“He brings a professional attitude to his registration and committee duties at Royals, makes a real impact on the footy-field, and is a great mate to everyone in the club.”
Club Captain Kieran Grealish also echoed these sentiments.
“Mark is a champion in every sense.
“To play 400 games for Royals is an outstanding achievement and is only matched by his determination and commitment to help steer the club through some of it toughest times off the field.
“I feel lucky to play at the same club as Youngy and luckier to call him a friend.”
ACT rugby supporters are invited to congratulate Mark on Saturday at Phillip Oval at 10.55am.
