White names team to face the Lions

The University if Canberra Brumbies have named their team to face the Lions in Johannesburg on Friday night with several changes to the side which lost to the Bulls last weekend.

Captain Ben Mowen will miss the Lions match with a neck complaint with Stephen Moore taking the Captaincy for the first time in 2012. Moore has captained the side previously and with more than 90 FxPro Super Rugby caps to his name has the experience to be a quality leader.

Mowen was disappointed to withdraw from the match on Thursday but knew it was in the team’s best interests. Mowen said he expected to be fit for next weekend’s home match with the Waratahs.

With Mowen out Leon Power has been recalled into the starting side at lock where he will partner Scott Fardy, while Peter Kimlin claims the blind-side flanker jumper moving Sam Carter to the bench.

Moving back into the starting side is Ruaidhri Murphy at loose-head prop, with Ben Alexander shifting to tight-head and Dan Palmer out of the 22. Palmer has been given the week to recover from several niggling injuries handing Scott Sio his second crack at Super Rugby.

The backline which orchestrated most of the side’s 34 points against the Bulls last weekend remains the same.

“This shapes as an important game for us as we want to return to Australian in good form,” Jake White said.

“The Lions have been struggling with injuries but the Brumbies have seen over the last couple of seasons that they are a very dangerous team. They managed a win at Canberra Stadium last year and have been close to knocking over some of the top teams this year.

“We will miss Ben (Mowen) as a Captain and around the park but Stephen Moore has 92 caps and has played many times for the Wallabies so I am more than comfortable leaving him in charge of the team.

“We are at the half-way point in the season when a lot of teams start to hit form. We need to stay focussed and maintain our standing as a team that can win tough games like this one, away from home in front of a vocal crowd.”

The game kicks-off in Australia on Saturday morning at 3.10am.
