Club kit signals link to community rugby

The University of Canberra Brumbies went back to basics at training this week, donning their club colours to connect with the community and promote Family Day, at Canberra Stadium this Saturday afternoon.

Christian Lealiifano wore his Vikings kit, Nic White Queanbeyan and Dan Palmer Gungahlin in a small tribute to the Canberra club competition and the steps forward the University of Canberra Brumbies are making.

Family Day is all about the community with the 3.30pm kick-off and Ben Alexander’s 50th cap big carrots for rugby-hungry Brumbies fans to turn out in droves.

Queanbeyan junior Anthony Hegarty was pleased to be back in the White strip he grew up in after spending the last two clubs seasons in Sydney with Manly.

“It’s great to be back. All the boys have embraced it and while we hope to be in the main squad for the majority of our season it’s going to strengthen the local competition to have us here which is certainly a good thing,” Hegarty said.

“I know Jono Owen has been dying to pull on the White jersey and I must say it suits him. He’ll be welcomed into Walsh’s with that jersey on.

“In saying that Patty McCabe looked pretty smart in light blue for Wests too. It’s a positive move for rugby here in Canberra.”
