BACKGROUND INFORMATION – INDIGENOUS DESIGN
Artist: Dale Huddleston (Wiradjuri Nation, Australia)
Artwork Title: Tribal Gathering
Story: Brumbies Rugby covers the ACT and southern NSW regions. This area has a number of Aboriginal nations which are represented in the design by their totems. Totems can be a natural object, plant or animal and are a spiritual symbol of the connection between people and the land. The people are responsible for the conservation of their totems.
Central to the design is the bogong moth, a totem of the Ngunnawal nation surrounding Canberra and a vital food source for the Ngunnawal people, and the surrounding nations of the Yuin, the Dorriga and the Wiradjuri. Totems of the Yuin and Wiradjuri people are represented by foot prints of the black duck and goanna.
This shirt represents the gathering of these nations to feast on the bogong moth in the Brindabella Mountains near Canberra, ACT, with hoofprints symbolising the region’s wild horses – the brumbies.
