With Christian Lealiifano returning to the squad for the start of the 2018 season, there was always a chance that Wharenui Hawera’s opportunities would take a hit after the up-shot flyhalf started every game the previous year.

However, Hawera was still an integral part of the squad last season. Whether it was in the number 10 jersey, or providing energy from the finishers, ‘Futz’ showed his quality, distributing the ball well and being a constant threat at the gain-line

Born and raised in Hamilton, Hawera played for Mitre 10 Cup side Waikato from 2012 to 2015, the Flyhalf making 22 appearances for side over that period.

In 2016 Hawera joined Southland and took his game to a new level, playing in ten games and scoring 64 points for the Stags, the eighth most of any player in the competition.

Hawera had an outstanding first season in Brumbies colours, the pivot starting every match for the team during the 2017 Super Rugby season. In sixteen games Hawera scores two tries and 122 points for the Brumbies, placing him in the upper echelon of point scorers in the competition.

Hawera had one of the standout solo performances of the 2018 season, his placekicking masterclass against the Sharks helped the Brumbies get their first win of the year.

Going into his third season, with Kyle Godwin departing, expect Hawera to continue his progression in 2019. When Hawera is at his best, he looks world-class, and if the Brumbies are to make the playoffs again, Hawera will certainly have a part to play.
