A relative unknown heading into the 2017 Super Rugby season, Wharenui Hawera showed he belonged at the top level with the Brumbies.

Hawera joined the club for a trial just prior to the 2017 Super Rugby season, the Kiwi born playmaker coming to the Capital with no guarantees of a contract. However, the 24-year old impressed the Brumbies coaching staff during the pre-season and was rewarded with a one year offer.

Born and raised in Hamilton, Hawera played for Mitre 10 Cup side Waikato from 2012 to 2015, the Flyhalf making 22 appearances for side over that period.

In 2016 Hawera joined Southland and took his game to a new level, playing in ten games and scoring 64 points for the Stags, the eighth most of any player in the competition.

Hawera had an outstanding first season in Brumbies colours, the pivot starting every match for the team during the 2017 Super Rugby season. In sixteen games Hawera scores two tries and 122 points for the Brumbies, placing him in the upper echelon of point scorers in the competition.

Now entering his second season as a fulltime professional, Hawera will be looking to build on the momentum he created with the Super Rugby club.
