Nine tries, a Wallabies call-up and now garnering comparisons to great players of old; Tom Banks became a star in 2018.

A Fullback with the ability to play on the wing as well, Banks made the move to the Brumbies prior to the start of the 2017 Super Rugby season after an impressive National Rugby Championship campaign with Queensland Country.

Banks made his Super Rugby debut in 2015 for the Queensland Reds against the Brumbies at Suncorp Stadium and he would play one more game for the side the following season before departing for the Brumbies.

The 24-year old made an immediate impression in Canberra, appearing in ten games in his debut season with club and establishing himself as the first choice Fullback in the capital. Banks scored three tries and set up many more with his pace and footwork proving to be real assets for the side.

You would think, given the meteoric rise of the young full-back, that last season was a walk in the park. It started well for Banks, scoring a try away to the Sunwolves, but 2018 was not without its struggles for Banksy.

At times left out of the starting XV, Banks was forced to improve and work on his game. Left in that sink or swim situation, Banks blossomed, and his finish to the season was breathtaking.

If you were to pick a moment, his solo effort against the Bulls stands out, but Banks was consistently brilliant in the latter half of the campaign, constantly threatening the opposition and earning a maiden Wallabies cap against the All Blacks in Auckland. 2019 will be a chance for Banks to kick on.

If he does, don’t be surprised if he finds himself sitting at the top table of talent in Super Rugby.
