Robbie Abel is the perfect example of patience paying off, the 28-year old finally establishing himself as one of Australia’s best Super Rugby hookers in 2017.

After spending two years with the Western Force, but not making his Super Rugby debut, Abel made the move home to the Brumbies in 2016, making two appearances of the bench for the Canberra club.

It was a remarkable turnaround for Abel, the 28-year old had returned to the Capital in late 2015 with no guarantees of a contract. The former St Edmund’s College student impressed the Brumbies coaches with his performances for the UC Vikings in the National Rugby Championship before earning an Extended Playing Squad spot with the team.

In 2017 Abel featured in the Match Day squad for all 16 of the Brumbies games as they charged to an Australian Conference title, the hooker started three games for the side and showed he belonged at the top level with his strong performances.

Despite an unconventional throwing style, Abel is one of the better set piece hookers in Australia, his lineout throws rarely miss the mark and he is a strong scrummager.

Look for Robbie Abel to make a big impact on field for the Brumbies in 2018.
