Matt Lucas has been everywhere, and while he did enjoy a brief stint with Suntory Sungoliath in Japan, Lucas is back in Canberra for another season.

Born on the Gold Coast, Lucas attended St. Josephs College in Brisbane before graduating and playing for Sunnybank in the Queensland Premier Rugby competition.

The dynamic scrumhalf represented the Australian U20’s in both the 2011 and 2012 Junior World Cups, excelling on the world stage alongside several current Brumbies teammates.

His impressive performances earned him selection in the Australian Sevens team as well as an EPS contract with the Waratahs for the 2013 Super Rugby season. Lucas would make his Waratahs debut in Round 2 that year, coming off the bench against his home state Queensland Reds in Brisbane.

The Queenslander represented Manly in the Shute Shield during his time in Sydney, he became one of the club’s most popular players and leading them to a Grand Final berth in 2014.

The 26-year old would go on to make 33 appearances across four seasons for the Waratahs, impressing fans with his crisp service and strong goal kicking.

Dutifully backing up Joe Powell for large chunks of 2018, Lucas showcased his wide range of skills from halfback. His athleticism makes him a threat at the base and was a potent weapon for Dan McKellar against tired defences from the replacements bench.

With two young number nines in the Brumbies ranks, albeit Powell is an experienced campaigner at this stage, Lucas’ knowledge becomes very important. A veteran professional, Lucas has been at the Reds and the Waratahs previously and can provide a different perspective to the Canberran duo of Powell and Ryan Lonergan.

Most importantly, he provides necessary variation to the Brumbies game, and even showed against the Hurricanes that he can kick goal a bit too. A superb halfback, with plenty more to give in 2019.
