Folau Fainga’a’s story is well known at this point. Less than two years ago, the Brumbies Hooker was working as a laborer in Sydney, dreaming of Super Rugby. The Brumbies gave him a shot, and the result has been the unearthing of a star.

Fainga’a was a highly-touted talent from an early age, representing Australia at Schoolboy and U20 level and performing at a high standard.

Fainga’a joins the Brumbies after two successful years with the Sydney University club in the Shute Shield, helping the side to the 2016 Grand Final and outclassing many Super Rugby calibre players during his time in the competition.

The 23-year old has played with both the Sydney Stars and the NSW Country Eagles in the National Rugby Championship, developing under the tutelage of good friend and Wallabies teammate Tolu Latu.

Fainga’a wasn’t even in the running for a matchday spot last season until Josh Mann-Rea went down with an injury but then he was thrust into the starting job and never looked back.

Fainga’a’s natural brilliance was known, but his work on his fitness and throwing technique made all the difference and, in his rookie Super Rugby season, Fainga’a got his first Wallabies call up.

Mind you, he had trained with the Wallabies prior to setting foot on a Super Rugby field. Michael Cheika must have seen the same spark the Brumbies did.

The rise has been meteoric, and there are still steps to climb for Fainga’a who, as a former concreter, will hope to cement his position in 2019.
