There’s not much left to say about Christian Lealiifano. After battling with Leukemia in 2017, Lealiifano returned to the Brumbies in 2018 having gained a bit of sharpness from a brief but successful stint in Ireland, with Ulster.

After receiving a bone marrow transplant in October 2016, Lealiifano battled to remission and made an emotional return to action on the club’s mid-season trip to Singapore in June, 2017.

Christian made a cameo in the Brumbies quarter-final loss against the ‘Canes that year, and took the chance to sign with Ulster on a short-term deal.

The fairytale would have been for Christian to come back to the Brumbies and be his perfect self straight-away, cutting through defenders, snapping attackers in two in defence and splitting the posts from the tee.

Super Rugby cares not for fairytales though. It’s a brutal competition and Lealiifano took time to reacclimatize. After a mid-season top up of gym-work and R&R, Christian returned to the side and produced the goods.

He looked like the Christian Brumbies fans remembered and brimming with excitement for the future, Lealiifano decided to re-sign with the Brumbies for 2019.

Since 2007, Christian has made 132 appearances for the club, scoring 845 points in the process. He is a living Brumbies legend, and with what he has overcome, is one of the most beloved rugby players on the planet.

He’ll enjoy a spell in Japan, but Christian Lealiifano will be back at GIO Stadium in February, with a Super Rugby title (and perhaps a Gold jersey?) the primary focus.
