BIO

In what was nothing short of one of the most inspirational sporting comebacks of all time, Christian Lealiifano returned to the rugby field at the end of the 2017 Super Rugby season only ten months after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

After receiving a bone marrow transplant in October 2016, Lealiifano battled to remission and made an emotional return to action on the club’s mid-season trip to Singapore in June. Named on the bench for the match with the Asia Pacific Dragons, Lealiifano came into the fray in the 49th minute for Flyhalf Wharenui Hawera and landed five conversions as the Brumbies took the Austbrokers Canberra Cup with a 61-14 success.

A return to Super Rugby action appeared imminent, but a hamstring strain suffered in training minutes before the team announcement for the trip to Brisbane to play the Reds in Round 16, put things on hold. Lealiifano would make his comeback in the Quarter Final defeat to the Hurricanes at GIO Stadium, coming on at half-time for James Dargaville who suffered a head knock just before the break.

For a player who has racked up 796 points for the club in 118 Super Rugby appearances, plus has won nineteen Wallabies caps with a total of 124 points in the international arena, 2018 promises to be an amazing campaign.

A loan spell with Ulster in the PRO14 enabled Christian to get more rugby minutes under his belt and he is back raring to go for 2018.
