When Ben Hyne ruptured his ACL in the 2017 NRC season, being part of the Brumbies squad for this season was far from a certainty.

It’s clear to see why Ben was given the chance to prove himself. Hyne is a bruising back-row, who’s an excellent lineout operator. In his limited appearances for the Brumbies, Hyne has excelled.

Hyne made the move to Canberra in late 2015 for a trial with the Brumbies, the 194cm backrower impressed coaches during a stellar National Rugby Championship season with Brisbane City, who he helped to an undefeated Premiership winning season.

The 24-year old linked up with the Tuggeranong Vikings in the John I Dent Cup for 2016 where he dominated, helping the Vikings to an undefeated start to the season.

Hyne’s standout local performances didn’t go unnoticed, Brumbies Head Coach at the time Stephen Larkham rewarding him with a Development Contract and selecting him to make his Super Rugby debut at No.8 against the Queensland Reds.

Unfortunately for Hyne the debut did not go to plan, the youngster injuring his ankle after only four minutes of the game and being ruled out for the rest of the season.

After an off-season of rehab Hyne rejoined the Brumbies for 2017 on an Extended Playing Squad (EPS) contract, he would go on to make four appearances during the season.

It’s a credit to Ben that he fought for his Super Rugby future, working non-stop on healing his knee with the Brumbies staff and ending 2018 as skipper of the Canberra Vikings in the NRC.

You can be sure of one thing with Ben Hyne, when he wears a Brumbies jersey, he’ll give everything he has.
