Andy Muirhead’s Brumbies career started about as well as anyone can hope for. Two tries off the bench in Buenos Aires 2017 saw Muirhead earn a contract for last season, and despite it being his first full-season as a Super Rugby player, the wing/fullback didn’t look a step out of place

Muirhead made the move to Canberra at the end of 2016, the 25-year old taking up an opportunity to train with the squad during the pre-season.

Following the conclusion of the pre-season program Muirhead linked up with local club Canberra Royals in the John I Dent Cup where his performances lit the competition on fire and garnered the attention of Brumbies coaches.

The outside back was called into the Brumbies squad for their two-match tour of South Africa and Argentina, he made his Super Rugby debut in the last minute of the Brumbies victory over the Southern Kings. Muirhead would make his second Brumbies appearance against the Jaguares in Buenos Aires, coming off the bench and scoring a quick double to seal a Brumbies victory.

It was just rewards for the journey Muirhead had been on to get to Super Rugby, the Queenslander had performed well for Souths in Queensland Premier Rugby and had a stint with Counties Manukau in the ITM Cup before getting an opportunity with the Brumbies.

Opportunities were few and far between at times to start 2018 because of the wealth of options the Brumbies had in Muirhead’s position.

When he did play he was excellent and, towards the end of the season, Muirhead cemented his spot on the left wing, forming a deadly trio with Henry Speight and Tom Banks.

Returning from their tour to South Africa, the Brumbies back-three was Super Rugby’s best and Muirhead looked comfortable beside his international teammates.

Then, to cap off his first full year, Muirhead scored one of the tries of the year in the Brumbies hammering of the Waratahs in Sydney. Expect more Muirhead magic is 2019.
