With Christian Lealiifano returning to the squad for the start of the 2018 season, there was always a chance that Wharenui Hawera’s opportunities would take a hit after the up-shot flyhalf started every game the previous year. However, Hawera was still an integral part of the squad last season.
Whether it was in the number 10 jersey, or providing energy from the finishers, ‘Futz’ showed his quality, distributing the ball well and being a constant threat at the gain-line. Hawera had one of the standout solo performances of the season also, his placekicking masterclass against the Sharks helped the Brumbies get their first win of the year.
Going into his third season, with Kyle Godwin departing, expect Hawera to continue his progression in 2019. When Hawera is at his best, he looks world-class, and if the Brumbies are to make the playoffs again, Hawera will certainly have a part to play.
