The Brumbies have beaten RugbyWA 29-10 in the opening round of the 2020 Super W competition at GIO Stadium.

Three tries and a superb performance off the tee from Sammie Wood sealed the win for Adam Butt's side, on a night where a host of Brumbies made their first appearance for the club.

Loosehead prop, Krystal Fyfe opened it up for the Brumbies in her debut, barging her way through WA defenders after some good build up by the team. Sammie Wood would be successful with the conversion making it a 7-0 lead in just the second minute of the game.

The home side continued to attack as debut flanker and 2010 Rugby World Cup Wallaroo Rebecca Smyth found room and dove over the try line after good pressure from the Brumbies’ scrum. Wood was again successful off the tee making it a 14-0 lead.

RugbyWA answered back as the electric Ariana Hira-Herangi ended up on the finishing end of a set play for her side’s open try in the 12th minute.

The Brumbies continued to look strong in the scrum, forcing multiple collapses and pushing the visitors back with a force.

This pressure would pay off for the home team as club stalwart Louise Burrows powered her way through multiple defenders for a five-pointer.

Wood continued her perfect record with the boot and her conversion made it a 21-5 lead, which is what the side would carry into the half time break.

RugbyWA came out strong in the second half but it would be the Brumbies with first points in the second stanza as Wood landed a penalty goal from about 30 metres out.

The visitors found a groove when replacement hooker, Darryl Wickliffe pushed through the defence, making it 24-10 with half an hour to go in the match.

The home side hit back shortly after when a huge cut out pass from 17-year-old playmaker Ella Ryan found speedster Darcy Read on the wing, who crossed for the side’s fourth try of the match.

It would also prove to be the final score of the match as the Brumbies came away with a 29-10 victory to start their season.

Brumbies 29 (Tries: Fyfe, Smyth, Burrows, Read; Conversions: Wood 3; Penalty Goal: Wood) def RugbyWA 10 (Tries: Hira-Herangi, Wickliffe)
