Plus500 Brumbies Looking for Attacking Spark against Sharks

Fresh from signing an extension to his Plus500 Brumbies contract, that will see him remain with the club until the end of the 2019 Super Rugby season, fullback Tom Banks is expecting better things this weekend.

After returning to training and some recovery time planned later this week, following their return from Melbourne, the team is looking to perfect their execution in attack.

Outside back Banks expressed his confidence that, after looking at the feedback from last week’s game against the Rebels, the boys are feeling positive about their attacking form this weekend when they face South African side the Sharks.

“We know what we can do when we execute our strategies and we didn’t do that in patches of the game that were pretty crucial against the Rebels,” Banks said. “The belief’s there and we know what we’re capable of if we get it right.

“I wouldn’t say we’re on the back-foot, but I’d say we’re probably underdogs, but it’s a title we’re happy to go with. We know what we can do when we put our structures together and we execute, so we’re ready as much as we can be.”

Banks also reflected on the start of the season and how the travel had affected the team after tough road trips to Tokyo, Brisbane and Victoria.

“It’s a pretty tough way to start the season, especially with three away games but that’s the thing, we want come back, we want to build confidence because our structures are there,” he said.

“We’re creating space and we’ve got to take those opportunities as we make them, so obviously, at home this week, we’ve just got to try and get the win.”

Backs coach, Peter Hewat, also mentioned that the team was pleased to be back on familiar soil this weekend.

“It’s great to be home this week in front of the home fans, after being away for four weeks with the Sunshine Coast trial and the Brisbane 10s, over in Tokyo and [then] the two away games,” Hewat commented.

“So yeah, it’s really pleasing for us to be home this week in front of our fans and a full week of training, we’ll see how we go on Saturday night against the Sharks.”

Hewat noted that the team has been low on energy over the last couple of weeks and the coaching staff were keen to rectify that on Saturday evening.

“I think we were down on energy against the Reds and then again on Friday night,” Hewat revealed. “I think we started the game well but then, we lost a little bit of spark through both halves. Whether that’s fatigue or the travel we’ve done, that’s something we’re looking to get into the game, get some enthusiasm and some spark in by the end of this week.

“We’re looking to continue to play up-tempo and play attacking rugby and just hopefully, this week, bring that spark, that enthusiasm into that game and start finishing the chances that we’re creating.”

Don’t forget, the Brumbies have a special ticket offer for Super W this Saturday, 17 March. Between 4.50-5.20 pm you can purchase a ticket at the door for just $5. Memberships available here, tickets for individual games can be purchased at ticketek.
