11 Oct ACT Vets to take on Politicians for Charity
The ACT Veterans Rugby Club is playing its annual charity fund raising match against the Australian Parliamentary Sporting Club XV on Sunday 15th October at Viking Park, Wanniassa – kick-off is at 12.30pm. The match, which is certain to end in a 9 all draw (a core rule of Veterans Rugby), is the curtain raiser for the far more serious National Rugby Championship (NRC) game between the Canberra Vikings and the Sydney Rays, which kicks off at 2:30pm.
The Parliamentary XV rugby team comprises of MPs and Senators from Federal, State and Territory parliaments, and their staff. The team has played in tournaments around the world, including the Parliamentary Rugby World Cup against lawmakers from the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, South Africa and New Zealand. The team is the current Parliamentary World Champion, having won the 2015 Parliamentary Rugby World Cup in the United Kingdom.
The Australian Parliamentary Sporting Club exists to foster international relations development and friendship as part of a world-wide movement. Members participate in a number of sporting events throughout the year across a range of sports including cricket, football, golf, rugby, netball, tennis and many others. Internationally, Australia is one of eight participating nations under the control of the Council for Inter Parliamentary Sport. During the last 10 years substantial sums have been raised for many charitable causes. Peter Breckenridge of the Australian Parliament Sports Club says “We encourage participation in sport for people of all abilities with a view to improving fitness, health and enjoyment. In the last 10 years, we have also raised over $500,000 through the efforts of members and the generosity of our partners for charitable causes. We are looking forward to our match against the ACT Veterans”.
This year the match is being played for the ASG Cup and the Heart Foundation Cup, each of which comes with a donation to a local charity. Two local businesses, ASG Group and Xact Project Consultants, are sponsoring the game with their respective contributions enabling the ACT Vets to support both the Canberra Hospital Foundation and the Heart Foundation. Presentation of giant cheques to each recipient will follow the game.
Xact Project Consultants is a Canberra based business which provides professional ‘client-side’ project management and advisory services for the building, property and infrastructure sectors. Xact has been an active supporter of the ACT Vets for over 15 years. This year will mark the 3rd year of their direct support of the Heart Foundation Cup which not only benefits a very worthwhile charity but is also played in memory of Vets’ club members who have passed away.
