Brumbies get JGC Campaign underway against NSW Country

The Brumbies Junior Gold Cup squad head to Macquarie University this weekend to take on the New South Wales Country Eagles with the game scheduled for 10:30am as the competition gets underway.

The team will also face the Sydney Rays, Sydney Rams and South Australia in the competition during September. Head Coach Andrew Withers is looking forward to the challenge.

“The team have been preparing for this fixture for nearly nine months now,” Withers said. “Hours and hours of preparation have gone into this and as a group we are very keen to get our Junior Gold Cup campaign off to a positive start.

“The vibe in the team is incredibly positive. This particular group respond to feedback really well and the commitment they show to each other is impressive. They wear their heart on their sleeve and this is evident in all that they do.”

The squad looks very good on paper and has a strength in depth which Withers acknowledged, despite the obvious youthful nature of the team.

“The beauty of this team is that there isn’t any single player who we rely on,” he said. “Each player brings their own unique skill set and personality to the side and we have tried really hard as a group to reduce the “rock star” mentality and emphasise the importance of team work.

“These young men, despite many having played rugby for ten or more years, are in the beginning stage of their careers. As a group, we have reiterated the importance of each player knowing their role in the team and not being afraid to back their intuitive decision making.

“Every day is a school day, another chance to learn. There’s always room for improvement and as a coaching team we have great expectations for these guys. They are incredibly coachable and relish hearing ways in which they can improve. Regardless of age, that’s a fantastic attribute for any rugby player to have.”
