22 Aug Versatile Smith extends Brumbies stay
Plus500 Brumbies are pleased to announce the re-signing of Andrew Smith for the 2018 Super Rugby season.
The 32-year old has spent seven seasons with the Brumbies over two stints, playing for both Irish Province Munster in the Pro12 and French outfit Montpellier in the Top 14 in between.
Smith made his debut for the Brumbies in 2010 and has gone on to make 65 appearances for the side, scoring 30 points.
A hard runner with a strong defensive pedigree, Smith will continue add experience and versatility to an already sharp Brumbies backline.
Smith’s ability to cover multiple backline positions, he has played for the Brumbies in both centre positions and on the wing, will be a luxury for incoming Head Coach Dan McKellar.
McKellar said he was pleased to have Smith back on board for 2018.
“It’s great for the club to have someone of Andrew’s experience signed up for the 2018 Super Rugby season,” McKellar said.
“Smithy’s experience and ability to cover a number of positions makes him a valuable member of our group.
“He has played for the Brumbies for a long time now and understands what the club means to Canberra and Southern NSW, and the community, and that is important for us as a club.
“Andrew is an extremely popular member of our squad and we are really excited to have him back for 2018.”
Smith meanwhile said he was very happy to sign a new deal with the Brumbies.
“I am thrilled that I will be playing with the Brumbies for another season in the 2018 Super Rugby competition and continuing my career with a club that I love,” Smith said of his re-signing.
“I have been at the Brumbies for close to seven years now and appreciate and understand the unique style, culture and brand of football that comes with being a Brumby.
“It’s not just the tangible things on the field that make the Brumbies so special, it’s that intangible sense of belonging, of being part of a family and of being welcomed by that family everywhere you go.
“It really is a unique club to be a part of and I feel extremely lucky that I have had this experience as a major part of my rugby career. I am looking forward to helping the club towards a Super Rugby title in 2018.”
