Uni-Norths and Easts to clash for the Owen Brown Memorial Cup
The Aquis Entertainment John I Dent Cup enters Round 8 this weekend with a trio of intriguing matches set to take place across the Capital. The Hahn SuperDry match of the round will see Easts take on the Uni-North Owls with the Owen Brown Memorial Cup on the line.
Uni Norths were pipped by competition heavyweights the Gungahlin Eagles last week, whilst Easts were heavily defeated as they leaked 104 points against Queanbeyan in a performance they will quickly want to forget.
The Owls were gallant in defeat last week, the performance giving the side plenty of confidence, hooker James Lynch believes that the team is improving but he is wary of “dangerous” Easts side.
“It’s been a tough start to the season, but we are building,” Lynch said.
“we were really unlucky to lose last week but we are getting better.
“They will be dangerous this week, they will be very hungry. They are great out-wide and very physical we need our set piece to be good and to muscle up in defence.”
Easts were bitterly disappointing last week and sit bottom of the ladder without a win, flanker Tom Pilkinton believes the only way is up and is expecting Uni Norths to be another big challenge.
“We hold ourselves accountable for last week, we aren’t hiding away from it,” the flanker said.
“They have some really good players, Dave Bennett is one of the most underrated players in the competition, Sam Irwin is lethal off the boot… they have a great set piece, we need to match them.”
This fixture will be very interesting with Easts trying to restore pride back in their performances, while Uni Norths are trying to push for a playoffs birth, anything can happen.
Elsewhere, Gungahlin will host high-flying Royals in a massive game which could have implications on who finishes top this season. Tuggeranong Vikings will look to avenge last week’s shock loss as they prepare the tackle the unpredictable Wests at Viking Park. Queanbeyan have the bye.
Tuggeranong Vikings v Wests (Viking Park, 15:05)
Easts Rugby Club v Uni North (Griffith Oval, 15:05)
Gungahlin Eagles v Royals (Gungahlin Enclosed, 15:05)
