19 May Tupuola and Boyle named in Wallaroos Squad
Brumbies Women’s young guns Violeta Tupuola and Millie Boyle have both been named in the Buildcorp Wallaroos squad alongside Aussie 7’s Captain and Royals girl Sharni Williams for the three Test tour of New Zealand in matches against England, New Zealand, and Canada this June.
Head Coach Paul Verrell has named Aussie 7s Co-Captains, Shannon Parry and Williams, alongside ten debutants and seven players who debuted last year as the team looks to build for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Ireland this August.
Joining the experience of Parry and Williams will be Wallaroos veteran, Ashleigh Hewson who will be looking to player her 13th Test match for Australia with the support of senior players, Cheyenne Campbell, Caroline Fairs, Rebecca Clough, Cobie-Jane Morgan, Liz Patu and Natasha Haines.
2017 is shaping up to be the biggest year on record for Women’s XVs Rugby in Australia. After a successful Buildcorp National XVs Championship in May, the Wallaroos will play three international Tests in New Zealand against the three best Women’s XVs teams in the world with New Zealand ranked first followed by England and Canada respectively. The side will then depart for Ireland in August, culminating in the most match preparation they will have ever had together before a World Cup campaign.
Australia will use the New Zealand tour as an intense preparation camp for the World Cup, and the tour will be followed by a final camp in Sydney to finalise preparation for Women’s XVs Rugby’s biggest prize.
Buildcorp Wallaroos Head Coach Paul Verrell said: “We have been monitoring players in training and in matches since we returned from New Zealand last year, and the players named in this squad is a testament to their hard work and performances over the last twelve months.
“It has been very encouraging to see the next generation coming through. They have really lifted their work rate both on and off the field, which has led to their selection in this squad. Combined with the experience of Shannon Parry, Sharni Williams, Ash Hewson, Cheyenne Campbell and Rebecca Clough, we feel we have a very strong squad for this tour.
“We’ll continue the hard work for our three tough Test matches this June, as we continue to build depth for our Women’s Rugby World Cup campaign.”
