Brumbies fall in tight contest to Lions
The Brumbies have suffered their fourth straight defeat tonight at the hands of the Lions, going down 13-6 on a cold evening at GIO Stadium.
The Brumbies gave the South African team all they could handle for the full 80 minutes but just couldn’t find a way through their defensive line to score the winning try.
It seemed like the perfect start for the home team when James Dargaville crossed in the corner in the fifth minute. Unfortunately the try was disallowed as Wharenui Hawera was lining up the conversion due to a knock on in the ruck.
Despite the early set back the Brumbies continued to dominate the early parts of the game, enjoying great field position and breaking the Lions’ line on numerous occasions.
The away team was more then up for the challenge, displaying some brilliant covering defence to hold the Brumbies out and making them really work for their first points which eventually came in the 19th minute.
Hawera made no mistakes from the kicking tee, converting at penalty to give his team a 3-point lead.
The next 20 minutes proved to be a massive grind for both teams as neither one wanted to give anything away. Both packs put their bodies on the line and defended their hearts out to go into the break with the Brumbies leading 3-0.
The Lions’ first points of the night came off Elton Jantjies left foot as the flyhalf slotted a penalty in the 50th minute to level the score.
Moments later, the Lions’ shot to the lead as Kwagga Smith ran 65 meters to cross for a fantastic try and give his side their first lead. Jantjies added the extra two to take the score to 10 points to 3.
Hawera continued his good form, making it two from two with the boot in the 61st minute to reduce the margin to just four points.
Joe Powell looked threatening for the home team, splitting the Lions’ defence in half twice but was pulled down agonizingly short on both occasions by the determined visitors.
A late penalty kick sealed the win for the Lions, adding the extra three to end the game at 6 points to 13.
