Butler to lead UC Vikings again in 2016

Jarrad Butler has been named the University of Canberra Vikings captain for 2016 while Robbie Coleman and Blake Enever have been named as vice-captains for the upcoming National Rugby Championship campaign.

Butler captained the side in 2015, leading the UC Vikings to the NRC grand final in a season where the side won eight matches and dropped just two, both to undefeated champions Brisbane City.

The versatile backrower also crossed the line nine times in 2015 to lead the UC Vikings try-scoring tally. The 25-year old was one of the UC Vikings inaugural vice-captains in 2014, a year he won the side’s Players’ Player award.

Butler says he feels privileged to have been asked to captain the side again in 2016.

“It’s definitely a huge honour, to captain a side that represents Canberra’s Rugby community,” Butler said.

“We came close to winning last year and I think that is spurring a lot of us on again, to go one better.

“There’s some new faces in here who have been at the top of their game in the John I Dent Cup, so we have great depth in key positions which I think will be important.

“Working with Blake and Robbie will also be a huge honour for me.

“They are great friends of mine so to be able to share the leadership of this team with them this year will be something I think we will all remember in the years to come.”

DSC_0612_editedColeman has been named vice-captain upon his return to the NRC squad, after missing the 2015 season through injury. In 2014, Coleman was one of the UC Vikings standouts, winning the side’s Best Back Award.

“Really looking forward to getting back out there with this team,” Coleman said.

“To be named vice-captain is special for me. I’ve grown up playing in the local competition, so to be able to lead this side in some way and help younger players coming through is something I feel very honoured to do.”

For Enever, the vice-captaincy follows a strong 2015 NRC season where he called lineouts and was a key member of the starting side, playing in all ten matches.

“Very proud to be a part of the leadership team alongside Robbie and Jarrad,” Enever said.

“I’ve been in Canberra for two years now, so to be recognised with something like this means a lot to me.”

The UC Vikings open the 2016 NRC with an away trip to the Gold Coast to take on Queensland Country this Sunday at 3pm.

The side’s first home match will be against the NSW Country Eagles on Sunday, 4 September at Viking Park.
