19 May Staniforth re-signs with Brumbies for another two years
The Aquis Brumbies are pleased to announce that promising youngster Tom Staniforth has re-signed with the club on a new two-year deal.
The ACT junior has been one of the Brumbies on-field success stories of 2016. Almost two years after making his Super Rugby debut against the Queensland Reds, Staniforth forced his way onto the bench for the Brumbies round three match against the Western Force in Perth earlier this year.
Staniforth has featured in nine matches in 2016 and after a string of impressive performances from the bench forced his way into the starting side for the Brumbies round 10 clash against the Highlanders in Invercargill.
The 21-year old Canberra Grammar graduate has transformed his body since joining the Brumbies program on a temporary contract in 2014 before being upgraded, stacking on almost 10 kilograms since leaving school.
The 113 kilogram lock helped lead Royals to the 2015 John I Dent Cup premiership and was rewarded for his club form with the competition’s highest individual honour, the MacDougall Medal.
The former Australian Under 20s vice-captain says he’s very happy to be staying with his hometown club.
“I’m very pleased to be staying here for another two years,” Staniforth said.
“Coming through Canberra’s junior competition it was always a dream to play Super Rugby for the Brumbies. Knowing that I’ll be here until 2018, I’m very excited.
“I’m really grateful for having a chance to play professional Rugby for the team I grew up supporting, I love playing for Royals as well.”
Brumbies Head Coach Stephen Larkham said he’s pleased Staniforth has signed on for another two seasons.
“He’s had an exceptional season, which is credit to how hard he has worked over the past couple of years on developing his all-round game,” Larkham said.
“Tom is a great young talent that has risen through the ranks of ACT rugby.
“His rise to a Super Rugby contract is a great reflection of our Pathways Program which supports young players.
“He is continually developing his game and we are very happy that he is staying with us for the next two years.”
