22 Apr Butler re-signs with the Brumbies
Aquis Brumbies backrower Jarrad Butler has re-signed with the club on a new one-year deal. The new deal keeps the 24-year old in the nation’s capital until at least the end of 2017.
Butler has played 40 matches for the Brumbies since joining the club in 2014. Prior to his time with the Brumbies, he played for the Queensland Reds, making 12 appearances in 2012 and 2013. A student of renowned Rugby nursery The Southport School on the Gold Coast, Butler’s Super Rugby debut came as a 20-year old on 6 July, 2012 vs the Highlanders.
He celebrated his 50th Super Rugby appearance with a Brumbies win over the NSW Waratahs at GIO Stadium in round two of the 2016 Super Rugby competition.
After linking with the Brumbies as a 22-year old, Butler had a breakout debut season in Canberra. He scored one try and played in all 18 matches before being voted as the Brett Robinson Players’ Player, the Brumbies highest peer-voted honour.
Born in Wellington, Butler has represented Australia at both schoolboys and U20 level and was last year hand-picked by Wallabies Head Coach, Michael Cheika, to represent the famous Barbarians FC side following the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Butler was also the UC Vikings captain for the 2015 National Rugby Championship, where he scored nine tries from ten appearances. He played a leading role in taking the side to the competition’s grand final.
Brumbies Head Coach Stephen Larkham is happy Butler is staying with the side.
“Jarrad has proved time and time again that he is one of the best up and coming players in Australian Rugby,” Larkham said.
“He has been a consistent member of the Brumbies match day side since joining the club and plays a vital role every week whether it is as a reserve or a starting player.
Butler said he is looking forward to another year with the Brumbies.
“I am very proud to wear the Brumbies jersey and be a part of a squad that is filled with so much talent,” Butler said.
“The opportunity to work within this program and continue our push for a Super Rugby title is one I am looking forward to.
“It’s very pleasing to know that I’ll be here again next year.”
The Brumbies are currently preparing for Sunday afternoon’s Anzac match against the Crusaders at GIO Stadium.
