Michael Wells a late call up for Super Rugby debut

Michael Wells has been named as a reserve for the Brumbies match against the Stormers at Newlands this evening.

Michael Wells has been named as a reserve for the Brumbies match against the Stormers at Newlands this evening.

The Aquis Brumbies will make two changes for tonight’s match against the Stormers at Newlands Stadium due to a knee injury to backrower Jarrad Butler.

Jordan Smiler will now start the match at No.8 while rookie Michael Wells has been named to possibly make his Super Rugby debut from the bench.

Butler has been ruled out of Super Rugby action for at least four weeks following a knee injury suffered at training in Cape Town this week. He was injured during a team session in Cape Town. Scans have now revealed he suffered damage to a medial ligament.

Butler, who has played 51 Super Rugby matches, has already begun rehabilitation.

Brumbies Head Coach Stephen Larkham says its unfortunate news.

“Jarrad has been in great form this season,” Larkham said.

“He was going through some drills at training and twisted his knee. We gave him every chance to recover in time for the Stormers match but the scans have revealed damage to the medial ligament.

“Jarrad will be with the team tonight before flying home to continue his rehabilitation and we hope to have him back playing in around four weeks.”

Butler’s replacement, Jordan Smiler, has started every match of the 2016 Super Rugby season from the bench and can cover a number of key backrow positions.

Wells, who will now wear the Brumbies No.20 jersey against the Stormers, left the Australian Sevens program in 2015 to link with the Brumbies for his chance at Super Rugby.

In his only appearance to date for the Brumbies, he scored a try in the trial match against the NSW Waratahs in Wagga Wagga in February.

The Sydney-born 22-year old can cover a number of positions in the back row. He was one of four players flown to South Africa by Brumbies Head Coach Stephen Larkham earlier this week to cover for any potential injuries and has trained with the squad since Tuesday.

The Brumbies take on the Stormers at Newlands at 7:05pm this evening (4:05am Sunday AEDT).
