01 Apr Wallaby prospects Vaea, Arnold extend contracts
Ita Vaea and Rory Arnold have both signed two-year contract extensions and will remain with the Aquis Brumbies through to the end of 2017.
2015 has been a huge season for both players as Vaea returned from a life-threatening, blood-clot injury and Arnold made his Australian professional debut. As two players being spoken about in lofty circles, the Brumbies see Vaea and Arnold as genuine threats for Wallabies spots over the next 12 months.
Vaea said it was the culmination of two years’ work to be back on the fulltime roster.
“When I was first told that my blood clots could threaten my career it was pretty confronting. To be here with a fulltime contract almost three years down the track is exciting for me and my family,” Vaea said.
“Resuming my career with the Brumbies is something I never gave up on. I’ve been pretty lucky too, with the support that Bernie and the other boys here have given me over the last couple of years.”
Like Vaea, Arnold was pleased to be given a chance to further his career with the Brumbies. The 208cm lock was playing third grade rugby just four years ago, but since giving it a proper crack he has represented the NSW/QLD Country side against the British and Irish Lions and played a season of Currie Cup with Griquas.
“The Brumbies has really provided me with an outlet to test myself against the best so it’s exciting for me to be offered another two years here,” Arnold said.
“It wasn’t that long ago that rugby wasn’t an option for me, so a two year contract means a lot. I think back to what I knew when I arrived about nine months ago and it’s been a real whirlwind experience.
“If I can continue to grow as a play over the next two years then it’s mission accomplished in many ways.”
