Nathan Charles

The Brumbies Academy’s Nathan Charles has been selected as the starting hooker to take on the Hurricanes in the CA Brumbies’ first pre-season trial at Canberra Stadium on Friday night. Charles joined the Brumbies Rugby set-up after representing the Australian Under 20’s and Sydney Univeristy premiership-winning side in 2008. Brumby Jack caught up with “Cheesey” ahead of his senior provincial debut.

Brumby Jack: How does it feel to be making your CA Brumbies debut against the Hurricanes this week?
Nathan Charles:
It’s very exciting, very flattering to have been selected but I can’t get too caught up in it as there’s still a lot of hard work to do.

BJ: What do you think will be the main differences in Friday night’s game as opposed to the rugby you’ve played previously?
NC:
The intensity and the physicality are the two main things. But I think the quality of everything will be higher than what I’ve experienced before.

BJ: Have you spoken with Andy Friend or Owen Finegan in regards to your role on Friday night?
NC:
I haven’t spoken to those two too much about it. I have spoken to Young [Bill Young] about scrimmaging and what’s expected. I haven’t sat down with the coaches individually but as a team we know that there’s an expectation to our set piece and after that it’s a matter of playing my own game and doing the best I can.

BJ: How much have you learned training under Bill Young and alongside guys like Stephen Moore and Huia Edmonds?
NC:
I learned so much that I can’t really even explain. Being around them and learning from their experience has been great. I feel like I’ve come on in leaps and bounds since I’ve been part of the squad.

BJ: What sort of goals have you set yourself for 2009?
NC:
Play some good football, have a lot of fun and try to become a better footballer by learning as much as I can from the senior guys in the squad.
