Shawn Mackay - CTHWBJNew recruit Shawn Mackay has linked with the CA Brumbies for some preliminary training ahead of the beginning of 2009 Investec Super 14 Pre-Season Training on Monday, October 27. Mackay joins the CA Brumbies from the Australian Sevens side, which he has been a part of since 2004. The mobile lock/back rower also represented the Sydney Roosters after leaving school in 2000. Brumby Jack caught up with Mackay in the lead-up to 2009 Pre-Season Training.
Brumby Jack: How have you found your initial CA Brumbies experience? Shawn Mackay: I’ve really enjoyed it. Training’s been full on but it’s been good to get stuck into the weights over the last four weeks and it’s given me a good headstart before we head into pre-season training in about five weeks time.
BJ: You’ve played a lot of elite-level football over the past eight years. What’s been your highlight up until this time? SM: Playing in the Sevens World Cup about three years ago was very memorable. Playing in Hong Kong for the first time was very special and that’s probably my best rugby experience so far.
BJ: You’ve played a lot of Sevens football, what similarities do you see between the abridged version of the game and Investec Super 14 rugby, particularly under the ELV’s? SM: The new rules have opened the game up a lot and everyone in all positions need to be able to use the ball – it doesn’t matter whether you’re a prop or a winger these days, you’ve got to be able to run and move the ball.
BJ: What key attributes do you see yourself bringing to the CA Brumbies for 2009? SM: I think I’m probably a different style of lock – I like running with the ball but at the same time you’ve still got to do the hard work and be hitting the rucks like a second rower. I like the lineout involvement and I see the lineout as one of the most crucial areas of the game particularly for an attacking backline like the Brumbies. If I can contribute to getting some lineout ball for the other boys to run away and score some tries then I’ll be very happy.
BJ: Do you prefer to play lock as opposed to the back row? SM: There has been a bit of a changeover of locks from last year so I think there could be an opportunity there. But, at the same time, if I can fill in in the back row then I’ll be more than happy to lend a hand there – I’m just looking forward to getting an opportunity and having a crack.
BJ: Have you set yourself any personal goals for 2009? SM: Yeah, definitely. I’d love to start a couple of games next year but we’ll just play it by ear. Hopefully I’ll get a run in the trials, get the body in good order and if I get the opportunity to get out there and have a crack then I’ll be going hell for leather. I’m really looking forward to it.
