Tyrone Smith made a triumphant return to rugby union in 2008 following a five-year absence from the code in rugby league. Smith featured in each match for the CA Brumbies during his debut Investec Super 14 season, starting in 12 of his 13 appearances in the absence of Gene Fairbanks, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Stirling Mortlock. The former Tongan rugby league international quickly asserted himself as a player to watch following a man-of-the-match performance in Week Two against the Highlanders and tries in successive weeks against the Hurricanes, Cheetahs and Chiefs. Smith’s stellar season was recognised with the Australian Rookie of the Year Award. Following his inaugural Investec Super 14 season, he was selected for the Barbarians squad for their summer tour against Belgium, Ireland and England, alongside Mitchell Chapman and former CA Brumby Stephen Larkham. He returned to take up his position within the Australia A squad during the Pacific Nations Cup, earning one cap off the bench against Japan and a starting appearance in the side’s 20-15 win over Samoa in Apia.
Born in Sydney, Smith, brother of CA Brumbies and Wallabies flanker George Smith, played his junior football with the Warringah Roos before taking up a scholarship at St Edmund’s College in Canberra. Having toured the United Kingdom with the Australian Schoolboys in 2002, he crossed codes and signed with the National Rugby League’s Sydney Roosters in the same year. Smith played two seasons for the Roosters Premier League side, including scoring a try in their 30-8 grand final win over St George Illawarra in 2004, before linking with the London Broncos in 2005. That year he made his international rugby league debut for Tonga against Samoa, scoring two tries in their 34-20 win in Sydney. Smith added a further three international caps and three tries to his tally during Tonga’s Federation Shield campaign in 2006, with the side eventually succumbing to England, 32-14, in the final. Smith completed his spell with Harlequins RL (formerly the London Broncos) in the European Super League with 62 matches and 22 tries for the London-based club.
