Tyrone Smith’s star continues to rise within the ranks of Australian rugby. After making a successful return to rugby, following a five-year absence, and claiming the Australian Rookie of the Year in 2008, Smith backed up his debut Investec Bank Super 14 season with another impressive year in 2009. The elusive ball carrier and ferocious defender covered both inside and outside centre during the Investec Bank Super 14 season and played each match for the CA Brumbies. Smith’s 13 caps during 2009 continue his impressive run of not having missed a game since making his Investec Bank Super 14 debut in Week One 2008. Smith, younger brother of CA Brumbies and Wallabies flanker George Smith, joined the CA Brumbies from UK Super League club, Harlequins RL (formerly the London Broncos), where he played 75 Super League matches and scored 24 tries. The robust centre ended his three-year stint in the UK when he agreed to return to Canberra – where he attended St Edmund’s College – to join his brother at the CA Brumbies. While he may still be yet to wear Wallaby gold, Smith already has a rich football resume that includes a Premier League premiership with the NRL’s Sydney Roosters, four international rugby league caps for Tonga as well as representing Australia A in the 2008 Pacific Nations Cup. The 26-year-old will continue to etch his own place in Australian rugby circles over the next two years after re-signing with the CA Brumbies until the end of 2011.
