Josh Holmes is regarded as an exceptional rugby talent and outstanding long-term scrum base prospect for the CA Brumbies and Wallabies. The 20 year old joins the CA Brumbies from the NSW Waratahs, having made his Investec Super 14 debut for the Sydneysiders against his new province at Canberra Stadium in 2007. The six-foot-one, 91-kilogram scrumhalf is a powerful physical specimen who possesses a pinpoint pass and probing running game. Having made his first Investec Super 14 appearance in April, Holmes scored his maiden Investec Super 14 try a fortnight later in his starting debut for the NSW Waratahs in their 26-25 loss to the Highlanders at Aussie Stadium. Following the end of the Investec Super 14 season, he was selected in the Australia A squad for the Pacific Nations Cup where he scored three tries in five matches before helping lead the Western Sydney Rams to a finals appearance in the Mazda Australian Rugby Championship, alongside Brumbies Academy prop Ben Alexander. Holmes will vie for the CA Brumbies’ ‘9’ jersey with Patrick Phibbs and the Brumbies Academy’s Nick Haydon.
Born in Sydney and having played his junior rugby with the Newport Breakers, Holmes, who represented the Australian Schoolboys in 2004, was recruited on an ARU High Performance Unit contract straight out of Barrenjoey High School on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The wily half made his state debut for NSW against Auckland in 2005 and travelled with the squad during the end-of-season Development Tour of Eastern Europe. Holmes’ star rose in 2006 when he was a member of the World Championship-winning Australian Under 19’s squad with CA Brumbies Anthony and Saia Faingaa and Christian Lealiifano, represented the Australian Under 21’s and was nominated as one of three finalists for the IRB’s Under 19 Player of the Year. Holmes, despite having not yet made his top-class provincial debut at the time, was also drafted into the Australia A squad for its two-match series against Fiji, before he was called into the extended Wallabies squad ahead of the final Tri-Nations match against New Zealand.
