Stirling Mortlock continues to retain his mantle as the world’s premier outside centre. The aggressive midfielder remains agonisingly close to breaking the revered 100 Investec Super 14 match mark after an injury-interrupted year denied him his opportunity in 2007. Despite this, Mortlock continued his lead-by-example captaincy scoring three tries in his six matches last season. After becoming the 73rd Wallabies captain during the 2006 Spring Tour, Mortlock continued to lead the Australians through Tests against Wales and Fiji, before guiding the team to wins over New Zealand and South Africa. Mortlock, who celebrated his 50th Test against the Springboks in Johannesburg, played an instrumental role in the Wallabies 20-15 upset over the All Blacks, setting up Scott Staniforth for the match-winning try that was ultimately judged Try of the Year at the annual John Eales Medal dinner. The 30 year old, regarded by many as the most potent attacking backline player in world rugby, retained the captaincy for the Rugby World Cup and was the top point scorer for the Wallabies, despite missing their matches against Fiji and Canada with a shoulder injury. Born in Sydney, Mortlock began his rugby career with Lindfield at four years old. After attending the King’s School, Mortlock joined the CA Brumbies in 1998 and has become one of the stalwarts of Australian rugby. Having made his Test debut against Argentina in 2000, the barnstorming centre will long be remembered for his sideline penalty goal in 2000 against South Africa in Durban to win Australia’s first Tri Nations crown and his 80-metre intercept try at Telstra Stadium to help knock the All Blacks out of the 2003 Rugby World Cup semi final. He succeeded George Gregan as CA Brumbies captain in 2004, before a knee injury robbed him of the opportunity to lead the side to their second Super 12 title. The robust skipper has proven a born leader and remains the CA Brumbies’ highest all-time point-scorer (with 875 points) and second only to Joe Roff as top tryscorer (48 tries) and third on the Wallabies’ all-time list of Test point scorers.
