Stirling Mortlock is a modern great of Australian rugby and has been a proven match-winner for the CA Brumbies and the Wallabies over the past decade. Mortlock has been a stalwart of the CA Brumbies’ line-up since making his debut in 1998 and his spectacular disregard for self preservation and combative style of rugby has provided CA Brumbies supporters with some of their most memorable moments over his 12-year Super Rugby career. In 2009 Mortlock became the highest all-time point-scorer in Super Rugby history when he eclipsed Crusaders flyhalf Andrew Mehrtens’ record of 990 points against the Blues at Canberra Stadium. Mortlock only needs four points to become the first player to surpass 1,000 Super Rugby points. Not restricted to merely being a goal-kicking utility back, Mortlock’s immense strength and sharp footwork allowed him to pass 50 career tries during the 2009 Investec Super 14 season, and joining former CA Brumbies teammate Joe Roff as the only Australian to have achieved this feat. Spread across the centres and the wing during 2009, the former captain’s fearless, lead-by-example play was evident throughout the year, none more so than his kamikaze tackle on All Blacks prop Tony Woodcock in the CA Brumbies’ 37-15 win over the Blues. Mortlock’s career has been littered with milestone moments, not least of which were his sideline penalty goal against South Africa to win Australia’s first Tri Nations title (2000), his 80-metre intercept try to defeat the All Blacks during the 2003 Rugby World Cup semi final, and his over-the-head pass to Scott Staniforth to seal the Wallabies’ 20-15 win over the All Blacks in 2007. Career Timeline 1994 – Graduates from The King’s School. 1996 – Represents the Australian squad during the IRB Under 19 World Championship in Italy. 1997 – Tours Argentina with Wallabies; represents the Australian Under 21’s and Australian Barbarians. 1998 – Makes Super 12 debut for the CA Brumbies against the Waratahs in Sydney; earns his second tours with the Australian Under 21’s. 2000 – Sets a club record for most points scored in a Super Rugby season (194); named as the CA Brumbies’ ‘Best Back’; makes his Test debut against Argentina in Brisbane; becomes the fastest Australian to reach 50 and 100 Test points; caps the year off by kicking a last second penalty goal against South Africa to clinch Australia’s first Tri Nations title. 2001 – Sets a club point scoring record for one match, scoring 25 points against the Stormers in Canberra; missed the CA Brumbies’ first Super 12 title and the entire Test season after suffering a shoulder injury in their semi-final win over the Reds. 2002 – Receives the Brett Robinson Players’ Player Award for the CA Brumbies; named Australian Super 12 Player of the Year. 2003 – Secures the Australian ‘13’ jersey for the Rugby World Cup in Australia; scores an 80-metre intercept try in their semi-final win over the All Blacks. 2004 – Appointed CA Brumbies captain, taking over from George Gregan; misses the CA Brumbies’ second Super 12 title through a knee injury suffered in their semi-final win over the Chiefs. 2005 – Misses four Super 12 matches with a knee injury; named the CA Brumbies’ ‘Best Back’; his Test season is cut short by hamstring and calf injuries; is rested from the Spring Tour. 2006 – Scores nine tries during the Super 12 season; receives his third ‘Best Back’ award for the CA Brumbies; named as the 73rd player to captain Australia for their Test against England in Melbourne; earns three more captaincy caps on the Spring Tour. 2007 – Misses seven matches through a broken hand and concussion during the Investec Bank Super 14 season; captains Australia in eight Tests; scores 101 Test points during the year to become the third highest point scorer; captains Australia during the Rugby World Cup in France. 2008 – Misses the first six matches after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction following the Rugby World Cup; returns in Week Eight against the Chiefs for his 100th Super Rugby cap; captains Australia to their first Test win in South Africa in eight years; re-signs with CA Brumbies until 2010. 2009 – Plays at inside and outside centre, and the wing for the CA Brumbies; scores 50th career Super Rugby try against the Highlanders; becomes the highest point scorer in Super Rugby history; finishes the season as the third most-capped CA Brumbies player; misses the last four matches of the Tri Nations after injuring his knee against South Africa.
