Patrick Phibbs is a supremely fit, strong and athletic scrumhalf who has been a regular with the CA Brumbies for the past two seasons. The 26-year-old has completed his three-year tutelage under Australian rugby legend George Gregan and will be out to claim the CA Brumbies ‘9’ jersey for himself in 2008. Phibbs, who can also play flyhalf, missed the first round of the 2007 Investec Super 14 season through injury before rejoining the playing squad in Week Two to record nine caps, featuring an opportune 55-metre chip-and-regather try against the Cheetahs at Bloemfontein in March. Phibbs returned to club rugby before suffering a hamstring tear while playing for Randwick in Sydney’s Shute Shield. The injury delayed his debut for the Navy Canberra Vikings in the Mazda Australian Rugby Championship (ARC) with the tenacious half forced to wait until the fourth round to make his first appearance. Phibbs finished the tournament with five caps and a try against eventual Champions, the Central Coast Rays.
Born and raised in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, Phibbs attended Waverly College and has played with the Randwick club through the junior ranks and into the senior grades. Phibbs represented the Australian Sevens team from 2001 to 2004 and joined English Premiership club Saracens for a stint in 2003. He joined the CA Brumbies on a training contract in 2005 season and made his Super Rugby debut off the bench against the Reds at Canberra Stadium in Week Two. The following year Phibbs established himself as a regular in the CA Brumbies’ 22-man squad before going on to help Randwick to a Tooheys New Cup grand final appearance against Sydney University and star for the CA Brumbies in their successful Australian Provincial Championship campaign.
