Gene Fairbanks remained the premier defensive centre in the 2007 Investec Super 14. The pint-sized playmaker continues to play well above his 84 kilograms, consistently grounding bigger runners and carrying the ball across the gain line. Fairbanks was the starting inside centre for all but one CA Brumbies fixture in 2007, when he was rested against the Sharks after sustaining a head knock in the previous match against the Cheetahs. The fearless inside back was selected in the Australia A squad for the Pacific Nations Cup, earning four caps off the bench. Fairbanks took on the vice captaincy for the Navy Canberra Vikings in the Mazda Australian Rugby Championship until a syndesmosis injury to his right ankle against the Perth Spirit in the second week of the tournament ended his season. However, Fairbanks is rehabilitated and raring to go for 2008.

Born and raised in Queensland’s Goondiwindi, Fairbanks played junior rugby league with the Goondiwindi Boars before switching codes while at Downlands College in Toowoomba. Fairbanks, who was included in the inaugural Reds Rugby College intake in 1997, made his Super 12 debut for the Reds against the Chiefs in 2003. The former Australian Under 19’s and 21’s representative joined the CA Brumbies in 2005, scoring a try on debut against the Crusaders. The following year Fairbanks demonstrated his versatility when he filled in at flyhalf for an injured Stephen Larkham, as well as sharing the inside centre position with Matt Giteau, before he was selected for the Wallabies’ Spring Tour of Europe.
