Peter Playford recorded a successful 2007 that netted an Investec Super 14 debut, a Mazda Australian Rugby Championship (ARC) grand final appearance and a third consecutive Sydney club rugby premiership. After joining the CA Brumbies from New Zealand’s Tasman Makos, the 27 year old made his first Investec Super 14 appearance on the left wing in the starting line-up against the Blues in Week Two. Playford went on to win a further seven caps in his first season with the CA Brumbies, including starting at outside centre in the CA Brumbies’ historic 21-10 win against the Sharks in Durban. On completion of the provincial season, he returned to the Shute Shield to continue his prolific try-scoring record in the Sydney club rugby competition and register a hat trick of club titles with the Students in their 34-11 grand final win over Easts. Playford was recruited by the Melbourne Rebels for the Mazda ARC, accepting the position of ‘People’s Vice Captain’ for the new venture. He represented the Rebels in all but one of their matches through the tournament, including their semi and grand final fixtures, and was the leading try scorer for the Victorians with five tries.
Born in Sydney, Playford played junior soccer for the Cromer Kingfishers before attending St Joseph’s College, where he was chosen to represent the Australian Schoolboys in rugby in 1998. He was selected for the Australian Under 21’s in 2001 before joining the National Rugby League’s Sydney Roosters the following year. After spending 2003 and 2004 focusing on his economics degree at Sydney University, Playford returned to senior rugby and scored a record 29 tries for Sydney University in the 2005 Tooheys New Cup, eclipsing the previous best of 27 tries scored by Randwick’s Terry Ryan in 1971. His outstanding season was rewarded with selection for the Waratahs’ tour of Eastern Europe before joining the Makos for their debut season in the Air New Zealand Cup in 2006. Playford remained the Makos’ leading try scorer for the season, including a four-try haul in the side’s 56-16 win over Northland, before joining the CA Brumbies for the 2007 season.
