The Brumbies will continue their trend of world class open-side flankers in 2013 with the addition of David Pocock to an already ferocious forward pack.
Widely regarded as the best No 7 on the planet, Pocock comes to the Brumbies looking to refresh his career after seven years playing with the Western Force in Perth.
A renowned leader both on and off the field, Pocock’s recruitment has been hyped as one of the biggest coups in Brumbies history. Strong in contact and a master of controlling the breakdown, Pocock’s game is set to improve even further under the Brumbies coaching structure, with Jake White and Laurie Fisher eager to see him reach his potential.
A five-time Wallaby Captain who boasts another 40 Test caps for Australia, Pocock’s ability was most clearly evident in the Wallabies semi-final win over South Africa during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Pocock managed to hold the Boks almost single-handedly, drawing penalties from within kicking range and turning the ball at crucial points in the match. It was a textbook-Pocock performance and one that saw his side progress to the next stage of the tournament.
Twice nominated for the IRB Player of the Year Award, Pocock’s status as one of the game’s greats is constantly backed up by his tireless work ethic, un-coachable skill set and admirable leadership qualities.
Graduating from the Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane in 2005, Pocock was already an aged grade Australian representative having been picked for the Aussie Schools team that year alongside his schoolmate Quade Cooper.
Since then Pocock has represented Australia at almost every level, including the World Champion Under 19 side of 2006, the Australian A’s in 2007 and the Australian Under 20’s as skipper in 2008.
Hong Kong presented him with his first Wallabies jumper in 2008 and since then he has been one of the first picked, most recently as captain in his last five games.
Adding to his on-field credentials are Pocock’s strong links to charity and the community. A civic minded man who involves himself with many notable causes, Pocock’s greatest off-field triumph is through Eighty Twenty Vision, a foundation he set up to support the under-privileged in his native Zimbabwe.
