A standout debut season with the Brumbies has thrust Zack Holmes into the spotlight as the talented playmaker prepares to stake his claim on a starting spot for the 2013 Super Rugby season.
After featuring heavily for the Brumbies during their 2012 trial matches in Darwin and Cairns, Holmes made his Super Rugby debut against the Chiefs in New Zealand, ironically the same side his father had played for just over a decade earlier.
Injuries to Matt Toomua and Christian Lealiifano provided plenty of opportunity for Holmes in 2012. He took his chances with both hands, including an eye catching starting debut against the Hurricanes in Wellington that netted him 22 points and Man of the Match honours.
A Perth native, Holmes saved his best for his home state running in a try and setting up two others in his first trip west since moving to Canberra as the Brumbies romped to a 22-0 half-time lead.
Holmes has previously held a spot in the Force’s Academy but his rise to fame came as a star of the Australian Sevens program, which also featured the likes of Tevita Kuridrani and Robbie Coleman.
Holmes was first spotted by Brumbies coaches playing for Norths in Sydney’s Shute Shield. Along with the rest of the current squad he was invited to the talent identification camps at Narrabeen where Jake White offered him two years in Canberra.
