Playing 15 games in 2012, Carter has emerged as a long-term option for Jake White in the Brumbies lock stocks.
At just over 2m Carter is the Brumbies tallest timber (equal with Leon Power) and is a genuine second-rower. Starting his career at the prestigious rugby nursery Scots College at Bellevue Hill in Sydney’s east, Carter went on to claim a spot on Sydney University’s roster for 2010.
The 2010 season was a memorable one for Carter, who contributed to Uni’s sixth consecutive grand final win, and third over Randwick.
It was with the students Carter made his biggest impression, moving on to a Brumbies Academy contract in 2011 before making his Super Rugby debut with the top squad against the Rebels in Canberra late in the season.
Linking with his second-row partner against the Hurricanes in Wellington, Carter scored a cracking try, his second in New Zealand having earlier touched down against the Chiefs in week four.
Carter is an aggressive ball carrier who gets through plenty of work. He is regularly among the team’s top tackle makers and has worked hard at his set piece play throughout 2012. Props like having him on their back at scrum time, while his vertical elevation at line-out time makes his lifter’s job a whole lot easier.
The son of Wallaby David Carter, Sam will be shaping for another big season with the hope of following his old man into a gold jersey.
