A journeyman of the professional rugby circuit who has previously played for the Cheetahs, Lions, Western Province, Stormers and Blue Bulls at either Currie Cup or Super Rugby level, Lionel Cronje comes to the University of Canberra Brumbies looking for more opportunities.
The aged-grade South African representative has featured in seven Super Rugby games for the Stormers, the last of his caps occurring in 2011.
Most recently Cronje spent the 2013 Currie Cup with the Lions in Johannesburg where he played alongside fellow UC Brumbies outside back, Stephan Van Der Walt.
Cronje is a quality kicker, both in general play and for goal, complimenting his strong running game and accomplished ball skills.
Along with Conrad Hoffmann, Cronje has thrown all his eggs in one basket with a crack at the Australian conference under the foreign marquee player rule.
A big, strong playmaker, Cronje has spent most of his career playing flyhalf but is also comfortable in any jersey numbered 12, 13 or 15.
