Having moved up through the ranks of the EPS to the main squad as of last year, the Buffalo has made himself a dependable game-day regular.

Born in South Africa, Ruan moved to Brisbane from Cape Town at 16 where he was selected to play for the Australian Schoolboys. He then moved back to South Africa for his final year of school and was quickly called up to join the South African Schoolboys, thus putting him into select group of people to have represented both nations at that level.

Ruan then progressed to start his Super Rugby career off the bench with the Western Force, making appearances against the Blues and Crusaders. These brief cameos of Ruan’s barnstorming runs didn’t go unnoticed as it took no time at all for the Brumbies to swoop in and sign him on an EPS contract for the 2013 Season.

Ruan’s opening season was a productive one to say the least; making 8 appearances, a starting position against the British & Irish Lion victory as well as featuring in the entire finals series for 2013. Only moving upwards, Ruan continued to impress in 2014, featuring in all but 3 games of the season.

Now officially joined by twin brother in the top-squad (JP Smith), Ruan will be looking to make a statement of intent in the new year and kick off the Super Rugby Season with a bang.
