Auelua, Carter and Smith re-sign with Brumbies Rugby

The University of Canberra Brumbies have moved closer to securing a full roster for the 2014 Super Rugby season with Sam Carter, Fotu Auelua and Andrew Smith all committing to the club beyond the end of this year.

Both Auelua and Smith have signed one-year extensions while Carter has committed until the end of the 2015 season. They follow big name Wallabies like David Pocock, Stephen Moore, Ben Mowen and Ben Alexander who have all committed to the side beyond 2013, and Tevita Kuridrani who recommitted last week

“I’m pleased to be staying in Canberra for the foreseeable future, Canberra has been somewhere I’ve settled into over the last few years and it’s nice to have it sorted out so I can stay,” Carter said.

“We are close to the end of the season and making this announcement makes me even hungrier to get out there on Saturday and rip in against the Force. We’re developing something special here at the Brumbies and it’s exciting to have been given a chance to be a part of that moving forward.”

Smith has been a regular in the Brumbies backs since making his debut against the Blues back in 2010. Now one of the Brumbies elder statesmen, Smith said the decision to stay was made easy by the strong bonds within the club’s playing group.

“It’s well documented that we are a very tight group. Everyone lives quite close together and we spend a lot of time together away from training and that’s certainly an element of the club that I found quite appealing,” Smith said.

“I’ve got a young family now and Canberra has been fantastic in that regard. I’m pleased to have been given the chance to stay.

Also committing to a further season in Canberra, Auelua’s size and strength have been big boosts for the Brumbies since he arrived from Japan in 2012. The big loose-forward has been credited as a leader of the group, using his strong Samoan heritage to guide 11 players of Pacific Islander background, he being the oldest.

“It’s nice to be part of a group of players so hungry for success and to make their time playing professional rugby count,” Auelua said.

“We’ve all got personal goals but the team ambitions for this side are the most important element of what we are doing here in Canberra and everyone is on the same page. I’m pleased to be staying for at least another year and can’t wait to face the Western Force this weekend.”
