It’s just four days until the 2012 FxPro Super Rugby season kicks off and University of Canberra Brumbies forward Peter Kimlin knows his side needs a fast start to the year to build early momentum.
Now in his fifth year of professional rugby with the University of Canberra Brumbies, Kimlin’s experience will come in handy when he leads his young forwards around Canberra Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The twice-capped Wallaby has had his first full pre-season in three years, having overcome the injury plague that saw him miss almost two full seasons of rugby between 2009 and 2011.
Kimlin said while the 2012 season won’t be won or lost on Friday evening against the Force, a victory would set his side’s plans in motion and give the players confidence as their season unfolds.
“Being the season opener we are pretty keen to put in a quality performance to start the season. We have a bye in round two, so it would be nice getting to that stage with a win under the belt,” Kimlin said.
“For me personally it’s been good to start the season fresh, the last few years I’ve struggled with injury during pre-season. Last year I didn’t get back until the second round against the Rebels so to be ready for the season opener is exciting.”
Having assembled in late August, the University of Canberra Brumbies have had almost eight months to eat, sleep and train together. Kimlin said the he and his teammates had circled this Friday in their calendars months ago and they were now ready to play.
“It’s been a long pre-season, we’ve been training and living together for a few months now and I know a lot of the younger guys are jumping out of their skin to play this Friday night,” he said.
“Just like us the Force will be wanting a fast start to the season, they have a stack of young guys so there will be no shortage of enthusiasm from their end.
“We’ve prepared well and put in a lot of effort over the pre-season so hopefully that will be reflected in our performance on Friday night.”
The University of Canberra Brumbies will name their team to play the Force on Friday afternoon.
