ACT XV ready for battle

An ACT XV has been included in the International Defence Rugby Competition after the withdrawal of the South African Armed Forces late last week.

The competition features teams from China, France, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, New Zealand and broader Australia, and kicks off Saturday, October 1 at Viking Park.

At the conclusion of the 2011 John I Dent Cup, first grade coaches from each of the seven Premier Grade clubs were invited to nominate a player in every position across the pitch, with the votes collated to form the squad.

Brumbies Rugby Head Coach Jake White had planned to pull the boys together later in the year but the withdrawal of the South African team has presented an opportunity for the ACT XV to play much earlier.

Their first game, against the British Royal Navy on Tuesday, 5 October at TG Millner, Eastwood, will be the third time the boys have run together following two training sessions next week.

White said he would be keeping an eye on the team with plans to include them in big fixtures here in Canberra further down the line.

“It’s a chance for these boys to play their way into our calculations. These guys are the best in the Canberra competition – playing representative rugby like this is a fitting reward,” White said.

“We had planned to get these guys together and train right through the off season so the opening in this competition has come along just at the right time.”
