Brumbies fans will be given a look into the future of rugby in Canberra next week, when ACT schoolboys Andrew Robinson and Tom Staniforth take on New Zealand following their selection in the Australian squad.
Robinson is a clever inside back who specialises at inside centre, while Staniforth is a line-out jumping lock
The game will be Robinson’s first for the Australian Schoolboys after he was promoted from the Australian A team two weeks ago.
Robinson, who attends St Mary MacKillop College, was part of the Australian A team that tackled the English Schools in August at Oakhill College. The year 11 student said he was excited to be a part of Australia’s top team.
“It’s an honour really, to be picked for the Australian Schoolboys. You think about some of the great players who have been there before me and it’s quite humbling,” Robinson said.
“Tom and I are really excited to be given this opportunity and I’ll be taking as much as I can from the experience.”
Robinson's school Principal, Michael Lee, said the boys had done their schools proud.
"All of us at St Mary MacKillop College wish Andrew and the Australian Schoolboys team well," Mr Lee said.
"Andrew is clearly a talented player but here at school he's appreciated for his substance, integrity, and heart - a winning combination on and off the field."
Canberra Grammar student Staniforth, who is also in year 11, suggested facing the New Zealand Schools A team for the Australian Schools A will be the biggest challenge of his rugby life.
“We’re expecting a team of big physical boys, typical of what you get whenever you face a New Zealand team really,” Staniforth said.
“I want to play a physical game and make the most of every minute I’m out there.
“It was a huge surprise when I got the call a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t expect to be playing for Australia but I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity.”
