Wests face Eagles after Royals rumble

After scraping their way through to the next round of the John I Dent finals series on Sunday, Wests will be looking to build from that encouraging finish when they face Gungahlin this weekend for a spot in the Grand Final.

Despite trailing 24-13 with just eight minutes to go, tries to Tom Ruediger and Pama Fou in the final seconds gave the Lions their second win over the Royals this year.

Wests Coach Craig Robberds said his side would need to sharpen up this weekend if it was any chance of claiming a win against Gungahlin.

“We really need to hold on to the footy,” Robberds said.

“There were far too many turn overs on Sunday, both knock ons and at the break down. That will have to be turned around if we are going to move forward in this competition.”

Gungahlin and Wests have already played twice this year with one win each. Robberds was confident his side could move forward but would need to contain the Eagles talented squad both up front and out wide.

“Liam Winton and Rocky Ilolahia are their major threats up front – both of those guys will need to be contained,” he said.

“In the backs guys like Dawesy [Anthony Dawes] and Matt Hawke can also cause you trouble if they aren’t taken care of early.”
