Towering Tomane set for rugby reunion

The CA Technologies Brumbies have signed giant outside back Joseph Tomane (pron: Toe-mah-neh) to a two-year deal.

The former Melbourne Storm and Gold Coast Titans rugby league star was looking for an opportunity in rugby union, having gone through the junior representative ranks with players like James O’Connor and Matt Toomua.

At 1.87m tall and 105kg, Tomane will be one of the CA Technologies Brumbies biggest outside backs. Over the last four years Tomane has made a name for himself in rugby league with his dominant running style, fearless aggression and bone-jolting tackles.

The 21-year-old was rewarded for his outstanding performances in 2010 with selection in the Samoan rugby league train-on squad and is also a recognised goal kicker.

But the idea of a fresh start with World Cup winning coach Jake White was too good to refuse.

“I’m coming across for the challenge really, to be playing Super Rugby and to be coached by Jake White and the rest of the coaching staff is really exciting for me,” Tomane said.

“I’ve met with Stephen Larkham a few times already and he’s a cool guy, he’s one of the reasons I ended up coming down there and choosing the Brumbies.

“Bernie being there really sweetened the deal.”

A Nudgee College old boy who represented the Australian Schoolboys in 2007, Tomane has set himself both long and short term ambitions in rugby union.

“My first priority is to secure a spot in the starting XV – that’s where my head will be when I get down there and start training with the Brumbies,” he said.

“Hopefully I can extend my rugby career further than the next two years and ultimately I’d love to represent the Wallabies, but I think that’s looking at the bigger picture.

“I’ve got plenty of experience playing rugby and only started playing rugby league once I’d left school so I’m confident I’ll be able to pick up where I left off without too many troubles.”
