The CA Technologies Brumbies were unable to match a determined NSW Waratahs side in their final match of the 2011 season, going down 41–7 at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
In what was a disappointing send off for some of the CA Technologies Brumbies veterans, including Captain Matt Giteau and Mitchell Chapman, the Waratahs put up a dominant performance as they secured a place in the Super Rugby finals series.
Handling errors cost the CA Technologies Brumbies as they failed to capitalise on their limited attacking opportunities.
Lachie Turner opened the scoring after just three minutes, as the Waratahs quickly shifted the ball wide from a turnover, resulting in Kurtley Beale busting through the CA Technologies Brumbies defence to give the winger a clear 50m run to the line.
Things were not looking good for the CA Technologies Brumbies when Ben Alexander, who has played every minute of every game this season, was taken off injured after a head clash with man of the match Sitaleki Timani just seven minutes into the game.
The Waratahs were looking dangerous in attack, having the majority of field position and possession in the opening quarter, but the CA Technologies Brumbies managed to hold out the numerous attacking raids before Beale slotted a penalty goal in the 22nd minute.
The CA Technologies Brumbies were not holding anything back, with Matt Giteau hurling a risky pass deep in his half to Andrew Smith who was able to dodge a couple of defenders and get his side back out of danger.
The CA Technologies Brumbies got their first real attacking chance deep in Waratahs territory five minutes before half time and looked dangerous with Peter Kimlin breaking the line only to be pulled down just five metres short.
However it was to no avail, with an error giving the ball back to the Waratahs and a 10-0 lead at half time.
The beginning of second half was all too familiar for the CA Technologies Brumbies, with Timani barging over for an early try after the Waratahs had all of the possession. The former CA Technologies Brumby was in everything in defence and attack producing one of his best performances of the year.
Waratahs replacement Chris Alcock then put the match out of the CA Technologies Brumbies reach, busting through the defensive line to take a 27-0 lead after 60 minutes.
Further tries to Sosene Aseni and Dave Dennis then blew the score out considerably to 41-0 with just three minutes left to play – a disappointing end to the CA Technologies Brumbies toughest season on record.
Francis Fainifo went over for a consolation try in the corner after the bell after finding himself on a piece of Giteau magic just metres from the line. With both players finishing their time with the CA Technologies Brumbies on Saturday, the movement was a fitting send off for two of the club’s favourites.
Giteau landed the sideline conversion to cap off a wonderful career for the CA Technologies Brumbies.
NSW Waratahs 41 (Turner, Timani, Alcock, Anesi, Dennis tries; Beale 5 conversions; 2 penalty goals) CA Technologies Brumbies 7 (Fainifo try; Giteau goal)
